First Owie

Today started out like any other:
Later, while Finley was napping, Mom's good friend Katie showed up for a visit. After she'd been here for a few minutes, Mom and Katie heard a huge crash, followed by a loud and very sad cry. They sprinted upstairs, wondering whether Finley had managed to somehow fall out of his crib... Instead they found him in his crib holding onto the rail that had managed to come unlatched. Mommy picked him up to console him and only then noticed that he was bleeding... A LOT! At first they couldn't tell where the blood was coming from because it was all over his hands and face, but eventually figured out that he'd been cut inside his mouth. His poor little mouth was full of blood (hope this isn't too gorey for you)... Since it was the first time Finley was bleeding, Mommy didn't really know what to do besides hug her little sad boy. Thank goodness for level-headed Katie who immediately said, "We need to stop the bleeding, I'll get a washcloth and some ice." Fortunately the ice stopped things pretty quickly and we confirmed that all teeth were intact and that he probably wasn't going to need any stitches. The cut appears to be on the inside of his upper lip. Finley was still very sad for a long time and looked like this:

After a while, Finley decided that his new friend Katie was really really cool and cheered up quite a bit when she let him play with her cell phone:
Later we noticed that his upper lip was pretty swollen:
But, he was feeling okay, anyway:
He eventually felt well enough to force Katie to march up and down the Art Museum steps about 50 times:
Tonight he's doing just fine and currently squealing happily in the bathtub.

Shannon -- I just saw something on the news about cribs being recalled. Could yours be one of those?

Glad he's okay!

This crib is unlikely to have been recalled recently - it's about 25 years old and formerly belonged to my sister. It's actually in great shape and I'm pretty sure the side came unlatched due to user error - I had tried to raise the rail extra quietly that afternoon and think it must never have locked into place. Ever since then, we've been giving it a good hard push to make sure it's latched before we leave the room!
